WORCESTER, Mass. – The No. 4 Clark University baseball team (25-14) hosted No. 5 Wheaton (22-17) in the NEWMAC Tournament, fell behind early, and couldn't recover in a 12-1 loss to the Lyons on Wednesday afternoon from Granger Field.
Clark's 25 wins this season were the most since 2018 when the team tallied 26 victories. Some highlights from the year include beating Wheaton, Babson, Salve Regina, and MIT in NEWMAC games and reached their fourth NEWMAC Tournament.
Wheaton will now travel to No. 1 Salve Regina tomorrow for a contest beginning at 3:00 p.m.
How it Happened
- First-year Robby Roth retired the side in order in the top of the first and in the bottom of the inning, juniors Michael Soares and Dom Mariani each singled before Ben Oliveira got out of the jam.
- Roth forced the first two outs of the second before Wheaton drew a pair of walks, loaded the bases with a single from Ray Toth, an RBI single from Declan Lush, two RBI's from Tommy Beauregard, and a three-run homer from Robbie Lamond pushed the lead to 6-0.
- Junior Alfonso Jalil and sophomore Michael Salzillo drew walks in the bottom of the second before Oliveira forced a senior Carter Doran flyout to end the inning.
- Roth retired the first two batters of the third and junior Tommy Flaherty got the final out of the inning in relief before Oliveira retired the side in the third.
- Toth belted a leadoff homer to left in the fourth before Flaherty recovered by striking out two of the next three batters.
- Graduate student Ryan Caulfield singled through the right side to open the fourth, but Oliveira retired the next three hitters to end the inning.
- Flaherty and Oliveira each tossed scoreless fifth and sixth innings before the Lyons plated three more runs as Timmy Wagner belted a two-run homer and Tyler Bellan homered to extend the lead to 10-0.
- Graduate student Anthony LoCasto opened the seventh with a homer to left for Clark's first run of the game before senior Tyler Jones and Doran each reached base, but reliever Jackson Walsh forced the final three outs of the inning.
- Graduate student Casey Gorczyca struck out the final batter of the seventh before the Lyons plated a pair of runs in the top of the eighth as Wagner and Cali each hit balls that plated runs to push the edge to 12-1.
- Jack Feltovic tossed a scoreless eighth before graduate student Benjamin Spencer came in to retire the side in order in the ninth and Joe Mulhern closed the door on the Cougars in the ninth.
