DAVENPORT, Fla. – The Clark University baseball team (2-0) hit six homers, sparked by three from senior
Michael Soares, two from senior
Brayden Hollinrake, and one from sophomore
Cole Camara as the Cougars recorded a 23-14 victory over Grove City (3-4) on Monday from Northeast Regional Park.
The 23 runs is the most in a game since 2022 and the six homers are the most in a game dating back to 2010.
How it Happened
- Soares got Clark on the board with a homer to left field in the top of the first and in the bottom half, junior Brendan Bruun retired the first two batters and after Grove City countered with a run Bruun picked off Nick Remish at second base to end the inning.
- In the top of the second, Hollinrake belted his first homer of the year to left and sophomore Bennett Hewett drew a walk before Bryce Trischler got out of the inning as Clark led 2-1.
- Grove City responded with five runs in the bottom of the second and in the top of the third, sophomore Miles Fournier hit a sacrifice fly that scored junior Chas Caron to pull the Cougars back within three at 6-3.
- Bruun tossed a scoreless third before the Cougars exploded for nine runs as Hollinrake and Hewett scored off an RBI double from junior Alfonso Jalil, senior Dom Mariani drove in Jalil, Soares blasted his second homer of the game/a grand slam and Hollinrake hit his second homer of the contest/two-run homer to take a 12-6 edge.
- Bruun tallied another shutout inning in the fourth before junior Michael Salzillo singled and stole second and Soares belted an RBI ground rule double to left center as Clark led 13-6.
- Grove City responded with six runs in the fifth before first-year Tyler Hansen forced a double play to the end the inning and in the top of the sixth, Caron singled to center and brought home Hollinrake as the Cougars took a 14-12 lead into the bottom of the sixth.
- Hansen tossed a scoreless sixth and Grove City allowed no runs in the top of the seventh and added two runs in the seventh to tie the game at 14-14 entering the eighth.
- Salzillo and Fournier each registered RBI's in the top of the eighth with singles through the left side before Camara belted a three-run homer to left as Clark regained the lead at 19-14.
- Graduate student Connor Schmautz pitched a 1-2-3 eighth and Jalil roped an RBI double down the left field line and Mariani singled through the left side before Soares hit his third homer of the game to left as Clark's lead grew to 23-14.
- Schmautz tossed another perfect inning in the ninth as the scarlet and white registered a 23-14 win.
