WATERFORD, Conn. – The Clark University softball team (9-6, 0-2 NEWMAC) opened the NEWMAC portion of their schedule today against Coast Guard (8-4, 2-0 NEWMAC) and battled in both games, but ultimately dropped both on Saturday afternoon from Nazarchyk Field.
Game One: Coast Guard 8, Clark 5
- Junior Megan Dube tossed a scoreless first inning before junior Alexis Taudel roped a two-RBI double to left field that played seniors Felicia Salvati and Erin Slavin to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead.
- Sophomore Gricelda Castro registered an RBI on a fielder's choice that scored fellow sophomore Gwen Castro as Clark extended their edge to 3-0 in the top of the second.
- After a 1-2-3 second from Dube, she helped her own caused with an RBI double that scored sophomore Avery Dillon and Salvati drove Dube home with an infield single as the Cougars led 5-0.
- Coast Guard plated four runs in the bottom of the third and added two in the bottom of the fourth to take a 6-5 advantage before sophomore Merry Griffin singled, but was left on base.
- After Coast Guard scored another run in the fifth, Salvati, Taudel, and junior Charlise Quigley all reached base, but the Bears got out of the jam.
- The Bears added one final run in the sixth and in the top of the seventh, Dube got Clark's lone hit as they dropped game one 8-5.
Game Two: Coast Guard 4, Clark 3
- Quigley registered a leadoff single and came around to score on a ball hit by Dube to five the Cougars an early 1-0 lead.
- Senior Brooke Buzzeo got the ball for Clark in game two and tossed a scoreless first inning before the Bears scored three runs in the bottom of the second.
- After a scoreless third from Buzzeo, Salvati singled in the top of the fourth before being left on base.
- Slavin registered a single in the fifth, but was left on base and after a scoreless fifth from Buzzeo, Clark plated two runs in the top of the sixth as Taudel and Gric. Castro each recorded RBI's to tie the game at 3-3.
- Neither team registered a hit between the bottom of the sixth and top of the seventh before Abriana Schmutz hit a walk-off single as the Bears won 4-3.
What's Next
The scarlet and white will return to the field on Tuesday when they travel down Park Ave for a contest against Worcester State beginning at 4:00 p.m.
