Baseball Sweeps Allegheny, Takes Game One 5-3, Game Two 8-3

DAVENPORT, Fla. – The Clark University baseball team (4-0) improved their winning streak to four games with a pair of wins over Allegheny (4-4) on Tuesday from Northeast Regional Park.

Game One: Clark 5, Allegheny 3
  • First-year James Rabbitt got the ball for Clark in the first and allowed one run before forcing a ground out to second and in the bottom of the first, junior Michael Salzillo and seniors Dom Mariani and Michael Soares all drew walks and sophomore Miles Fournier singled up the middle to tie the game at 1-1.
  • Sophomore Cole Camara singled through the left side to bring home Mariani and fellow sophomore Bennett Hewett drove in a run with a fielder's choice as Clark took a 3-1 lead into the second.
  • Rabbitt forced a double play in the second and struck out a batter looking to end the second and Salzillo drew his second walk of the game before the Alligators got out of the inning.
  • In the top of the third, Rabbitt struck out the first two batters and forced a lineout to left field and in the bottom half, Fournier and Camara each reached base before Hewett drove in a run with a single to center field and Camara scored on a wild pitch to push Clark's lead to 5-1.
  • Senior Matthew Donahue entered the game with one out in the fourth an forced a flyout after a pair of Allegheny runs scored and in the bottom of the inning, Soares roped a double into center field and Fournier singled, but the Alligator got out of the jam as they trailed 5-3.
  • Donahue retired the next six batters and after allowing a hit in the seventh, he forced a lineout to first as the Cougars tallied a 5-3 win.  
Game Two: Clark 8, Allegheny 3
  • Mariani tripled to center field and came around to score on a passed ball before senior Alfonso Jalil hit a ball to short that brought home Soares as Clark led 2-0.
  • First-year Theodore Allan retired the side in order in the top of the first before the Alligators tied the game at 2-2 in the second with an RBI triple and run scored on a passed ball.
  • After Mariani got hit by pitch, Soares belted a two-run homer to left field and Jalil singled through the left side to push the lead to 5-2 entering the bottom of the third.
  • Sophomore Taejun Tow recorded three strikeouts in the bottom of the third and in the top of the fourth, first-year Michael Benway tallied his first career hit and scored a run after Camara got hit by pitch as the Cougars held a 6-2 advantage.
  • Tow got out of a first and second base jam in the bottom of the fourth and on the bottom of the fifth, first-year Andrew Mello struck out a batter swinging after the Alligators plated a run to take a 6-3 lead into the sixth.
  • Jalil roped a two-RBI double to right center to push their edge to 8-3 and both first-year Luke Costello and junior Chas Caron threw scoreless innings as the Cougars tallied an 8-3 victory.
What's Next
The scarlet and white will return to the field on Friday morning when they compete in a doubleheader against Cornell College beginning at 10:00 a.m.
