Softball Rallies for 8-7 Game One Win in Final Day Split in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. – Clark University Softball (6-4) entered their final day in Florida with matchups against Elizabethtown (5-3) and Carnegie Mellon (7-1). The Cougars used six runs in the sixth inning to storm back in front of their opening game against the Blue Jays, ultimately winning 8-7. The second game was a classic pitchers duel, with Clark getting a runner to third in the final inning but finishing just short in a 1-0 defeat to the Tartans.

(Game One) How it Happened

  • The Blue Jays struck first, using back-to-back doubles to bring home the opening run of the game in the top of the first inning. An error would then allow a second run to cross the plate, giving Elizabethtown an early 2-0 advantage.

  • Clark responded in the second inning, starting with a leadoff double to left center by sophomore Merry Griffin. Griffin came around to score two batters later on a single by senior Madison Dillon. Then it was sophomore Avery Dillon's turn, with her RBI single bringing home sophomore Avery Della Piana to tie the game at 2-2 after two innings.

  • After scoreless third and fourth innings, Elizabethtown retook the lead in the fifth, using a walk and a bunt single to get runners on base before scoring both later in the inning on a single to make it 4-2.

  • Another run was added by the Blue Jays in the sixth, with a double putting a runner in scoring position. A squeeze bunt later in the inning plated the runner ahead of the throw home to make it 5-2 after the top of the sixth.

  • The offense for the Cougars reemerged in the bottom of the inning, starting with a pair of singles by Madison Dillon and junior Charlese Quigley, with a following walk by senior Emelie Spence loading the bases.

  • Senior Erin Slavin took advantage, singling home Dillon to start the scoring for Clark. Sophomore Avery Dillon then ripped a double to the wall in right center field to score Quigley and Spence, tying the game at five.

  • Senior Megan Dube then put herself in line for the win in the circle, doubling home Slavin and Dillon to make it 7-5. Dube later scored on a grounder by Griffin to make it 8-5 headed into the seventh inning.

  • The Blue Jays battled in the seventh, scoring two runs on a single and getting the tying run as far as second base, but a Dube strikeout and a subsequent foul out behind the plate to catcher Della Piana ended the game in an 8-7 Clark win.

(Game One) Inside the Box Score

  • The Cougars recorded 11 hits, including four doubles in the effort.

  • Dube had two of the doubles, leading to two RBI and a run. She also pitched all seven innings in the circle, earning the win behind six strikeouts.

  • Madison Dillon finished three for three at the dish, also recording an RBI and a run.

(Game Two) How it Happened

  • The Tartans struck first in the bottom of the second, using a bunt single and a stolen base to put a runner in scoring position. That runner would come around to score the opening run of the game on an RBI single, making it 1-0 after two.

  • Clark threatened in the third, with back-to-back two-out singles from senior Megan Dube and sophomore Merry Griffin, but a hard-hit grounder to first was scooped up for the final out to keep Carnegie Mellon in front.

  • The Cougars were able to work the bases loaded in the fourth behind a walk from senior Felicia Salvati, a single through the left side from junior Charlese Quigley, and a hit-by-pitch from senior Emelie Spence. However, a hard-hit ball to second was fielded cleanly, keeping the game locked at 1-0.

  • Senior Brooke Buzzeo was stellar in the circle, keeping the game within reach for the Cougars with four straight scoreless innings heading into the seventh.

  • A walk from senior Emelie Spence and a single from sophomore Avery Dillon put runners on the corners with one out in the top of the seventh, but back-to-back strikeouts closed out the game in a 1-0 win for Carnegie Mellon.

(Game Two) Inside the Box Score

  • Four different Cougars accounted for the four Clark hits in the game, with Salvati also drawing two of the team's three walks in the effort.

  • Buzzeo pitched a gem, striking out eight over 6.0 innings of work, allowing just five hits and a single run.
