Baseball Registers 13-3 Victory Over St. Joe's (CT)

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Clark University baseball team (14-5) returned home for a non-conference contest against Saint Joseph's Conn. (13-8) and rattled off 13 runs in a 13-3 victory on Wednesday afternoon from Granger Field.

How it Happened
  • First-year Tyler Hansen threw a scoreless first inning and senior Michael Soares reached base in the bottom half, but was left on base.
  • First-year Caleb Winkley got hit by a pitch in the second after another scoreless inning from Hansen before sophomore Cole Camara hit a sacrifice fly to left field that plated sophomore Bennett Hewett to give Clark a 1-0 lead after three.
  • First-year Luke Costello tossed a scoreless fourth and in the bottom half, Winkley registered a sacrifice fly that scored junior Joseph Winakor as the Cougars led 2-0.
  • Mariani roped an RBI double to left that scored junior Michael Salzillo and Soares hit a two-RBI single that brought home Hewett and Mariani as Clark took a 5-0 advantage after four innings of play.
  • After the Blue Jays scored a pair of runs in the top of the fifth, Salzillo and Hewett each registered RBI's and Salzillo scored on a wild pitch to make it an 8-2 game.
  • First-year Andrew Mello got out of a first and second jam in the sixth after St. Joe's plated another run as the Cougars led 8-3.
  • Senior Alfonso Jalil drove in a run before Hewett belted a three-run homer and Soares hit an RBI double to push the advantage to 13-3.
  • First-years Micah Birnbaum and Cole Miller made their debuts on the mound as the scarlet and white registered a 13-3 victory.

  • Hewett led the team with four hits, four RBI's, three runs, and a homer.
  • Soares registered three RBI's, two hits, and a double.
  • Mariani added two hits, two doubles, two runs, and an RBI.
