Baseball Falls in High-Scoring Battle at Southern Maine

GORHAM, Maine – Clark University baseball (15-9) traveled north for its third game in as many days at Southern Maine (16-4). The Cougars led early, but a nine-run inning by the Huskies turned the tide, as Southern Maine finished the high-scoring affair on top, 21-12.

How it Happened

  • Sophomore Bennett Hewett took the opening pitch of the game for a ball, then launched the second pitch he saw over the left field wall for an opposite-field home run.

  • Another run was added in the inning as senior Michael Soares singled, advanced to second on a single from junior Cole Camara, and then to third on a wild pitch before scoring on a single from senior Brayden Hollinrake to make it 2-0.

  • Two more runs were added to the Cougar lead in the second, starting with a leadoff walk by junior Michael Salzillo. A hit-by-pitch on Hewett put two on with no outs, and senior Dom Mariani cleared the bases a batter later with an RBI double, increasing the margin to four runs.

  • The Huskies responded in the bottom of the inning, using a leadoff double before scoring that runner on a throwing error. Southern Maine added another run on an RBI double later in the inning to make it 4-2 after two.

  • Another run was shaved off the lead in the third, as a leadoff triple led to an RBI grounder for another Huskies run.

  • Southern Maine tied the game in the fourth, taking advantage of an error to move its leadoff hitter to third before an RBI grounder brought the run home to make it 4-4. The Huskies then took their first lead with another triple, this time with a runner on base, and followed with a single to extend the lead to 6-4.

  • Following a scoreless fifth, Clark loaded the bases with no outs after a Salzillo walk and singles by Hewett and Mariani. Soares drew a bases-loaded walk to make it a one-run game.

  • The Huskies responded in the bottom of the inning, breaking the game open with three two-RBI doubles and three RBI singles. Southern Maine scored nine runs in the inning to take a 15-5 lead after six.

  • Clark got six runs back in the seventh, starting with a leadoff double from sophomore Myles Fournier, who scored on a single from senior Alfonso Jalil. After the bases were loaded, a single from Hewett and a walk from Mariani plated two more runs.

  • Soares added another with a sacrifice fly, and a Camara grounder brought in another. Mariani later scored on a passed ball to cut the deficit to four runs.

  • Another run was added in the eighth, as a single from Soares scored Salzillo, who had been hit by a pitch earlier in the frame, to make it 15-12.

  • Southern Maine responded in the bottom of the inning with six insurance runs on four hits, including another triple. Clark was unable to add a run in the ninth, as the Huskies secured the 21-12 win.
