WORCESTER, Mass. – Clark University softball (15-19, 4-13 NEWMAC) hosted Wheaton (19-15, 9-9 NEWMAC) in the second-to-last series of the season for the Cougars. The Lyons scored the only run of game one in the seventh to win the pitchers duel 1-0. The second game saw both offenses put runs on the board, with Wheaton pulling away to win 11-2 after six innings to secure the sweep.
How it Happened (Game One)

Both teams would put runners in scoring position in the first two innings, with a double by junior Megan Dube and a walk from sophomore Avery Della Piana putting two runners on for the Cougars in the second.

After the scoreless opening innings, the third, fourth, and fifth saw no hits as Dube shined in the circle, setting down all nine hitters in order for Clark.

Wheaton would record a hit in the fifth, with Clark adding a hit as senior Emelie Spence singled in the bottom of the frame, but both runners were stranded.

After another scoreless inning, the Lyons would break through in the seventh, with a double to put a runner in scoring position and a single to bring them home for the ultimately winning run as Wheaton grabbed the 1-0 win in game one.

Spence would single to lead off the bottom of the first, advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Avery Dillon and to third on a grounder from sophomore Merry Griffin.

Wheaton would ignite the offense in the third inning, using four doubles to plate four runners and take a commanding 4-0 lead after three innings. The Lyons would add a two-run home run in the fifth to make it a six-run margin.

Clark would score their first runs in the fifth, loading the bases off a walk from senior Felicia Salvati, an error, and a single from junior Jennifer Albano. Then Spence would record her second hit, with a two-RBI single to bring home Salvati and sophomore Gricelda Castro to make it 6-2 after five.

The Lyons continued the offense in the sixth, scoring runs off a pair of singles and a sacrifice fly. Then another two-run home run would put the game into run rule territory with Wheaton taking a nine-run advantage into the bottom of the sixth.

A. Dillon would single, advancing as far as second, but the Lyons would get the three outs necessary to clinch the 11-2 win after six innings.
