Baseball Clinches Spot in Postseason, Registers First Career Win at Wheaton to Close Out Regular Season

NORTON, Mass. – The Clark University baseball team (21-16, 7-9 NEWMAC) earned a spot in the NEWMAC Tournament and registered their first career win at Wheaton (26-11, 10-6 NEWMAC) with a 13-9 victory in game one before falling 12-0 in game two on Saturday afternoon from Sidell Stadium.

The Cougars will take on No. 3 Babson on Wednesday afternoon from Govoni Field.

Game One: Clark 13, Wheaton 9
  • Sophomore Danny Goodman tossed a scoreless first before sophomore Myles Fournier belted a three-run homer that brought home senior Brayden Hollinrake and sophomore Cole Camara to give the Cougars an early 3-0 lead.
  • Goodman retired the Lyons in order in the second and third before junior Michael Salzillo roped a double to right center in the fourth, but was left on base.
  • Goodman allowed no runs in both the fourth and fifth before senior Alfonso Jalil recorded a three-RBI double to left center that brought home Salzillo, Hollinrake, and Camara as the Cougars took a 6-0 advantage.
  • Hollinrake roped a two-RBI double that plated both Camara and senior Dom Mariani as the scarlet and white pushed their lead to 8-0.
  • Wheaton scored five runs in the seventh before the Cougars answered with four runs as Mariani hit a three-run homer to left field that scored sophomore Bennett Hewett and junior Chas Caron and Camara singled to bring home senior Michael Soares to extend their lead to 12-5.
  • The Lyons added three runs in the eighth and in the top of the ninth, Jalil hit a sacrifice fly that scored Salzillo for Clark's final run as the Cougars registered a 13-9 victory.
Game Two: Wheaton 12, Clark 0 (F/7)
  • Senior Jake Faulkenham and Mariani both singled in the top of the first, but the Lyons got out of the inning and plated two runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 2-0 lead.
  • Hollinrake and senior Jake O'Donnell each reached base in the second before Wheaton got out of the inning and added three runs in the bottom of the inning to make it 5-0.
  • First-year Luke Costello tossed a scoreless third before the Lyons plated four runs in the fourth and added three more in the sixth as they registered a 12-0 victory.
What's Next
The Cougars will take on in the NEWMAC Tournament on Wednesday afternoon when they travel to No. 3 Babson beginning at 3:30 p.m.
