Wellesley, Mass. With strong performances
from three First-Years - Isabel Custodio (Powell, Ohio), Taylor
King (Walnut Creek, Calif.), and Elizabeth Campbell (Solona Beach,
Calif.) - Wellesley downed Clark in straight sets this evening at
Wellesley College.
The trio combined for 34 kills and an eye-popping .566 hitting
percentage to lead the Blue offense. The win lifts Wellesley to
14-6 on the season, 4-1 in the NEWMAC. Clark drops to 5-10 overall,
2-4 in the conference.
The Blue leaped to a 10-1 lead in game one, including three aces
from Campbell and two kills from King. Clark trimmed the lead to
15-10, with strong net play from ToniMarie Illuzzi
(Manorville, N.Y.) and Kristin McGinty (Vail,
Colo.). Wellesley pushed the lead back to eight points with kills
from Campbell and Custodio, and held on for a 25-15 win.
Wellesley jumped on top early in the second set as well, when
back-to-back kills from King gve the Blue an 11-6 lead. A
five-point serving run from Madeleine Brumley extended the
Wellesley lead to 17-8, as the hosts cruised to a 25-10
victory.
Clark rebounded early in game three, as the squads traded sideouts
in the opening points of the game. Wellesley opened a three-point
gap with a kill from Jessica Mullen (Wilmington, Del.), giving the
Blue a 9-6 lead. Serving runs from Alice Cummings (Talllahassee,
Fla.) and Victoria Peng (Diamond Bar, Calif.) helped stretched the
lead to 20-12. But Clark rallied, using aces from Emily Visone
(West Hempstead, N.Y.) and Kortney Kelley (Barnstable, Mass.),
along with two kills from McGinty to cut the lead to 22-18. But two
more kills from Campbell and one from Custodio sealed a 25-19 win
for the Blue.
McGinty led the visitors at the net, with five kills and one block.
Nicole Sullivan (Marshfield, Mass.) and
Amira Tranchell (Falmouth, Mass.) added four and
three kills respectively. Emily Sullivan (Nashua,
NH) and Nichole Lopez (Alameda, Calif.) shared
setting duties for Clark, combining for 19 assists. Visone led all
players with 15 digs.
Custudio led the Blue with 13 kills and 17 assists. King added 11
while Campbell chipped in 10. Cummings and Custodio notched 11 digs
each to anchor the Blue defense. Peng dished out 21 assists in the
win.
Clark returns to action on Saturday, October 17, when they travel
to UMass Dartmouth for a tri-match with Mass College of Liberal
Arts.
