Worcester, Mass. - Clark got goals from senior
Lauren
King (Piscataway, N.J.) and sophomore Rachel
Minsky (Bronx, N.Y.) en route to their third straight
win - a 2-0 victory over cross-town rival WPI in the NEWMAC women's
soccer opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon.
The win improves the Cougars to 6-4 overall, while the Engineers
slip to 4-7.
King put the hosts on the board first when she headed home her
first goal of the season off of a corner kick by senior Charlotte
Bowman(Peterborough, N.H.) in the 36th minute. The
assist for Bowman is her fourth helper in the last three games.
WPI, meanwhile, had their best scoring chance of the match go by in
the waning minutes of the first half when sophomore Suzanne Najem
(Derry, N.H.) fired a shot from just outside the box that sailed
high over the crossbar.
Clark tacked on an insurance tally midway through the second half
when sophomore Molly
Meehan (Scotch Plains, N.J.) sent a pass across the
box that Minsky pushed past WPI netminder Ally Stoyle (Pembroke,
Mass.) for her first collegiate goal.
Clark held a sizable advantage in shots (13-2) and a 7-2 edge in
corner kicks.
Stoyle turned away four shots between the pipes for the Engineers,
while Cougar keeper Joanna
Clark (Windham, Maine) didnt need to make any
stops to record her 15th career shutout.
Both teams return to action on Tuesday when the Cougars visit
Springfield and WPI hosts Wheaton.
