Springfield, Mass. - Behind a quartet of
players in double figures, Clark University captured the inaugural
Golden Bears Hoop Classic with a 74-64 victory over Mount Saint
Mary (N.Y.) at Western New England College's Alumni Healthful
Living Center.
Senior Mark
Alexander (Providence, R.I.) paced the Cougars with 21
points, five rebounds, four assists, and three steals while senior
Jack
Minister (Manchester, England), and sophomore forwards
Mitch
Renshaw (Rutland, Mass.) and Brian
Vayda (Sturbridge, Mass.) all added 12 points. Vayda,
the Tournament MVP, also pulled down nine rebounds and added two
steals.
In addition to Vayda, Alexander was named to the All-Tournament
Team.
Clark trailed 37-34 at halftime, but came back in the second half
and clinched the game with a game-sealing 21-8 run that was capped
by a Vayda steal and Alexander finish with 5:42 left.
The Cougars led by as many as 15 points down the stretch in
winning for the third time in four outings this season.
Mount Saint Mary (1-3) received 17 points and seven rebounds from
sophomore forward Carlos Valdez and 11 points from junior forward
Tim Morris.
Clark will play its final game before the Thanksgiving break on
Tuesday with a 5:30 p.m. tip against Anna Maria.
