Box Score 2 Worcester, Mass. – Host Clark University
posted a pair of dominating victories in two-non league matches on
Saturday afternoon at the Kneller Athletic Center.
The Cougars opened the day with a 3-0 win over Worcester-area
rival Anna Maria and then knocked off regional power
UMass-Dartmouth 3-0 later in the day to improve to 8-9 overall.
In their opening match with the AMCATS, Maritza
Fair (The Bronx, N.Y.) and freshman Katie
Byrnes (Southington, Conn.) combined for 17 kills in the
25-9, 25-14, 25-10 win. Freshman Katie Freaney
(Old Lyme, Conn.) handed out a career-high 15 assists and sophomore
ToniMarie Illuzzi (Manorville, N.Y.) led the team
with eight digs.
The game two upset of the Corsairs, who entered the match with
an 18-4 record, saw the same offensive balance that helped Clark
secure the win earlier in the day. Fair (team-high nine kills),
Parker Edmonds (Fort Worth, Texas) (eight kills)
and Byrnes (seven kills) powered the Clark offensive attack, while
freshman Rachel Spera (North Hollywood, Calif.)
handed out 28 assists.
Defensively, Fair added 17 digs and Kortney
Kelley (Barnstable, Mass.) had a match-high 22 of her
own.
Game scores were 25-12, 25-20 and 25-13.
Clark, now at 8-9 overall, returns to NEWMAC play on Tuesday
when they host perennial conference power Coast Guard, a team they
defeated last season. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m.
