Box Score Springfield, Mass. - The Springfield College
field hockey team scored three times in the second half to secure a
3-0 conference win over Clark University in New England Women's and
Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action.
The Pride move to 8-6 overall and 4-2 in NEWMAC play with the
win. Clark drops to 9-5 on the season and 2-4 in conference.
Springfield goalkeeper Alison McCarthy was able
to preserve a scoreless first half with an impressive one-on-one
save off a Clark counter attack. The Cougars' sophomore forward
Mel
Melkonian broke free and ran unchallenged for 40 yards
before McCarthy snuffed out her bid.
Less than four minutes into the second half, the Pride got on
the board for the game's first goal. Freshman Kelly
Gallo took a pass from Alexa Carlson and
ripped it past the Cougars' goalie for her team-leading ninth
marker of the year.
Six minutes later, Amy Dean finished a series
of passes from Carlson and Kayla Sokol on a
penalty corner to make the score 2-0. The Pride tacked on its third
goal of the stanza with just under 19 minutes left in regulation.
This time, junior forward Kaila Dee took a feed
from Meg Dobson in front of the Clark net and
slapped it into the back of the cage.
McCarthy finished with seven saves in the shutout victory and
made several key stops in the first half. Kate McGrath
surrendered all three goals despite making five saves. For the
contest, Springfield held a 15-10 edge in shots, including a 7-3
advantage in the second half.
