Box Score Worcester, Mass. – Five different Clark
players scored goals and the host Cougars rolled to a convincing
5-1 win over Smith College in New England Women's and Men's
Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) field hockey action on Saturday
afternoon.
The win for Clark improves their record to 7-4, while the
Pioneers drop their fourth consecutive contest to dip to 3-7. The
victory also extends the Cougars' winning streak over their NEWMAC
rival to four straight and 10 of the last 11.
Clark wasted little time scoring the game's first goal as
Mel
Melkonian (Worcester, Mass.) set up freshman
Talia Fish (Philadelphia, Pa.) for her ninth goal
of the season at the 1:05 mark.
After Nia Spooner (The Bronx, N.Y.) tied the game with help from
Alexandra Stein (Ann Arbor, Mich.) a little more than two minutes
later, Cougar freshman Kellee
Kosiorek (Enfield, N.H.) gave the lead back to Clark
off a feed from Kate Condon (Wading River,
N.Y.).
Melkonian then netted the final goal of the half on an
unassisted tally at 22:30 – a goal that pushed her season
point total past the old school mark of 46 set by Laura Stuto back
1990.
Clark added a pair of goals in the second half by Madeleine
Lutts (Salem, Mass.) and Meghan
Lennon (Charlton, Mass.) to put the game away.
The Cougars held sizable edges in shots (24-6) and penalty
corners (18-8).
Kate
McGrath (Wilmington, Mass.) made six saves in the cage
for Clark, while Savannah Lawson (Vinyard Haven, Mass.) turned back
14 shots for the Pioneers.
Smith is back in action on Thursday when they host Western New
England, while Clark turns around for a home contest against
Framingham State on Tuesday.
