No. 19 Judges Rally For OT Buzzer Beater

Box Score

Waltham, Mass. – Tyrone Hughes raced the full length of the court and banked in a layup high off the glass at the buzzer over a pair of Clark defenders to lift No. 19 Brandeis to a thrilling 67-65 win over the visiting Cougars on Tuesday evening at Red Auerbach Arena.

The Judges, who trailed by as many as 21 in the first half, eventually clawed their way back, but didn't take their first lead until the opening moments of overtime.

Clark, which fell behind by as many as six points in the extra session, rallied to even the score at 65-65 following a Travis Curley (Trumbull, Conn.) triple, a Mitch Renshaw (Rutland, Mass.) elbow jumper and a free throw from Jonathan Phillips (Shrewsbury, Mass.), but Hughes' mad dash as time expired gave the Judges the victory and kept them undefeated at 5-0.

The loss for the Cougars spoiled a terrific shooting night from behind the arc, as Clark connected on 10-of-15 triples, including seven-of-nine in the first half as they built a lead that peaked at 29-8 with 6:45 left in the opening stanza.

Brandeis methodically chipped away at the Clark lead and had it down to 12 at halftime (36-24) and a 10-0 run to open the second half got the Judges as close as they had been since the opening moments of the contest.

A 7-0 run over a six minute span by the Cougars, swung momentum back in Clark's favor and had the score at 45-36 with a little more than ten minutes left in regulation.

A Renshaw three-pointer even had the Cougar edge at 11 at 50-39 at the 7:22 mark, but a Brandeis 11-2 spurt brought the Judges to within two at 52-50 with 2:28 left.

Derek Retos then drilled a three-pointer with 32 seconds left to make the score 56-55 and a costly turnover in the backcourt set up the Judges' Ruben Kanya at the line and he split his two free throws to force overtime.

Clark shot 45 percent from the field for the contest, with nearly half of their made baskets coming from behind the arc, while Brandeis connected on 42 percent of their attempts.

Vayda led the Cougars with 11 points and eight rebounds, while Phillips came off the bench and scored 11 points as well in his first appearance of the season.  Curley ended with 10 points and four rebounds in a game-high 38 minutes and Jake Gubitose (Fiskdale, Mass.) chipped in with a career-high eight points and three assists in 22 minutes.

Vytus Kriskas paced the Judges with 13 points, while Retos added 11 points off the bench.

Clark (2-4) will look to return to the win column on Thursday when they host Worcester State beginning at 7:00 p.m.
