Box Score Worcester, Mass. - Powered by a three-hit,
four-RBI day from hit machine Scott Hollingsworth
(Tilton, N.H.) and the first career homerun from junior
Peter Lewis (Gardiner, Maine), Clark opened up its
2010 home baseball slate with a 15-7 win over visiting Gordon
College on Wednesday afternoon at Granger Field.
With the win, the Cougars snap a brief two-game slide, improving
their overall record to 4-5, while the Fighting Scots slip to
2-5.
Clark also got a solid start from freshman Andrew LeBlanc (Farmington, Conn.), who tossed six innings of
five-hit ball, while striking out six and allowing just one earned
run to pick up his first collegiate victory.
After getting out of a bases loaded scenario in the first inning,
LeBlanc's teammates put three runs across in the bottom of the
opening frame to give him an early cushion. Mitch
DeLorenzo (Berlin, Conn.) drove in the first run with a
triple to right center and after a walk to Ronald Bathrick (North Haven, Conn.), Kevin Kopec (Katonah, N.Y.) doubled home a pair.
Clark opened the game up in the second when they scored seven runs,
upping their advantage to 10-0. Wildness from starting pitcher
Andrew Zgrablich and reliever John Kanas aided the offensive output
as those two combined to uncork four wild pitches in the frame,
allowing three runs to score. The other four runs came on a
Hollingsworth two-run single and a Bathrick two-run double.
The Fighting Scots made things interesting in the fifth, pushing
five runs across highlighted by run scoring hits from Zgrablich,
Willy Whittet, and sacrifice flies from Eric Wolak and JT
Waldie.
The Cougars immediately answered with three runs in the bottom of
the fifth, when Hollingsworth drove in two more runs and DeLorenzo
plated another on a sacrifice fly of his own.
Clark put the game away in the sixth with Lewis' two-run blast to
left center.
In addition to Hollingsworth's 3-for-6 day, leadoff hitter
Stephen DeMartino (East Haven, Conn.) went 2-for-4
with two runs scored and Lewis had the Cougars' other multi-hit day
with a 2-for-3, three-run performance.
Clark will return to action on Thursday when they host Rivier
College beginning at 3 p.m.
