Box Score 2 Worcester, Mass. - For the second time in the
past three seasons, WPI swept both games of their annual
doubleheader with cross-town rival Clark, this time taking games
11-6 and 7-4 on Saturday afternoon at Granger Field.
The victories for the Engineers moves them to a perfect 10-0 on the
season and 2-0 in NEWMAC play, while the Cougars slip to 5-7
overall and 0-2 in conference action.
After scoring 41 runs in their two previous games, the Clark
offense could only muster ten runs during the twinbill sweep, as
the Engineers remained perfect on the season, while moving their
record against the Cougars to 9-2 in their last 11 meetings.
Game one started out with the Engineers racing out to an 8-0 lead,
with all eight runs coming in the second off of starter
James Wilson (Chatham, N.J.), who only lasted 1.1
innings. The big blows in the frame came courtesy of a two-run
double from Paul Galligan (Weymouth, Mass.) and a two-run triple
from Mike Swanton (Foxboro, Mass.).
The Cougars clawed back, scoring two runs in the third and four
more in the fourth to make the game, 8-6. The two runs in the third
came on the second career home run from Peter Lewis (Gardiner, Maine).
Clark manufactured runs in the fourth to get closer, as Ron
Bathrick (North Haven, Conn.) reached on error and worked
his way home via a wild pitch and a fielder's choice from
Mitch DeLorenzo (Berlin, Conn.). More runs came as
Phil DiMarco (Bellingham, Mass.) collected an RBI
triple and Kevin Kopec (Katonah, N.Y.) had a run
scoring base hit.
The Cougars would get no closer however, as WPI tacked on three
more runs with Jameson Kokolis (Manchester, N.H.), Joe Walsh
(Weymouth, Mass.) and Mark Dingnum (Albany, N.Y.) all drove in
runs.
Shane Sampson (Worcester, Mass.) tossed 4.1 innings of no-hit
relief to collect the win, as he and fellow reliever Thomas Whiting
(Farmington Hills, Mich.), held Clark hitless over the final four
innings.
Game two started out in fine fashion for Clark, as the Cougars
sprinted out to an early advantage, with Lewis connecting for a
two-run double to highlight a four-run first.
WPI methodically erased the Clark edge, getting two back in the
second on a sacrifice fly from Dingnum and an RBI double by Mitch
McClune (Pembroke, Mass.).
The Engineers evened the score in the third on a run scoring single
by Galligan and took the lead on an RBI double from Nick Bean
(Middleboro, Mass.) in the fourth.
The visitors added single runs in the sixth on an unearned run and
a solo homer to left by Kokolis in the ninth.
For the second straight game, WPI got excellent pitching out of its
bullpen with Brian Schopka (Tinton Falls, N.J.) and Whiting
combining to toss four innings of shutout relief.
Senior Brendan Solecki (Portsmouth, R.I.) was the
tough-luck loser for the Cougars, as he hurled a complete game,
striking out eight and walking just one.
The Engineers will put their undefeated record on the line on
Monday when they host Becker, while Clark will look to get back
into the win column on Tuesday with a home date with
UMass-Boston.
