Box Score Worcester, Mass. - Wheaton College freshman
Corey Laliberte (Fall River, Mass.) twirled seven-innings of
six-hit, six strikeout ball and classmate Sean Ryan (Norton, Mass.)
went 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI, lifting the visiting Lyons to a
3-1 win over Clark in New England Women's and Men's Athletic
Conference baseball action on Thursday afternoon.
With the win, Wheaton improves to 9-5 and 4-1 in league action,
while the Cougars slip to 8-8 and 2-3 in NEWMAC play.
The Lyons got on the board first in the top of the third as Ryan
singled home John Keating (Duxbury, Mass.), who led off the inning
with a base hit and advanced into scoring position on a sacrifice
by Tad Skelley (Wolfboro, N.H.).
Both teams missed scoring opportunities in the fourth inning as
neither team could push across a run with the bases loaded. Wheaton
had the best chance in the top of the frame but Cougar starter
Andrew LeBlanc (Farmington, Conn.) forced Dan
Gusovsky (Andover, Mass.) to hit into an inning-ending double
play.
Clark's opportunity came with two outs and the bases full when
Laliberte struck out Derek Dubois (Haverhill,
Mass.) to end the inning.
Wheaton tacked on another run in the top of the sixth after Ryan
doubled down the left field line and came around to score on Eric
Jensen's (Gorham, N.H.) single to left.
The Cougars plated their lone run in the bottom of the sixth when,
with two outs, Phil DiMarco (Bellingham, Mass.)
doubled to left field and Peter Lewis (Gardiner,
Maine) followed that up with an run-scoring single.
The Lyons then registered an insurance run with two outs in the
seventh. Hal Landers (Salem, N.H.) singled then stole second and
advanced to third on a throwing error. Ryan then hit a dribbler
down the first base line and outraced Mitch
DeLorenzo (Berlin, Conn.) to the bag, allowing Landers to
score from third.
Wheaton reliever Jon Shepard (Salisbury, Mass.) retired the final
three Clark batters to pick up his second save of the season.
LeBlanc (2-2), who tossed a career-high seven innings, took the
loss for the Cougars, who saw their three-game winning streak come
to an end.
DiMarco paced the Clark offense going 2-for-4, while catcher
Kevin Kopec (Katonah, N.Y.) added two hits and two
stolen bases.
In addition to Ryan's offensive output, Landers and Jensen each had
two hits.
Clark returns to the diamond on Friday with a road trip to Rhode
Island College, while the Lyons return to action on Friday as well
with a home date against Keene State.
