Box Score 2 Worcester, Mass. Clark and visiting MIT
split the final New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference
(NEWMAC) baseball doubleheader with the Cougars taking a 3-1
decision in game one and the Engineers taking the nightcap, 11-5 on
Sunday afternoon on Granger Field.
In the second game, senior Phil DiMarco
(Bellingham, Mass.) recorded his 100th career hit.
Senior Jonathan Merritt (Milton, Mass.) tossed a
complete game two-hitter for Clark, allowing just one earned run
while striking out three.
After MIT took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second on an RBI
single by Ricardo Perez, the Cougars struck back with an unearned
run in the fifth. DiMarco reached on an error and came around to
score on Mitch DeLorenzo's (Berlin, Conn.) RBI
double.
Merritt kept the Engineers at bay and Clark put the game away with
a two run seventh, highlighted by Steve
DeMartino's (East Haven, Conn.) leadoff homerun.
In game two, the Engineers raced out to a 5-2 lead and then added
five runs in the eighth to collect the win. DeMartino,
Scott Hollingsworth (Tilton, N.H.) and DiMarco all
had two hits for Clark.
MIT freshman Sean Fannin was the key cog for the Engineers, going
2-for-3 with three runs and four RBI.
Reliever Ryne Barry got the win for MIT, while Cougar first-year
Andrew LeBlanc (Farmington, Conn.) suffered the
defeat for Clark.
Both teams will take part in the upcoming NEWMAC Tournament on
Wednesday. MIT will face top-seeded Wheaton, while the Cougars are
scheduled to face off against crosstown rival WPI.
