Box Score Worcester, Mass. - Host Clark University banged
out 18 hits led by sophomore Mitch DeLorenzo's
(Berlin, Conn.) 4-for-5, three RBI performance and took a 14-11
decision over Babson College in New England Women's and Men's
Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) baseball action on Tuesday afternoon
on Granger Field.
The Cougar offense, which now has eight games with ten runs or more
this season, scored a run in six of their eight innings, including
eight in the decisive sixth frame when they sent 13 batters to the
plate.
The Beavers, meanwhile, entered the matchup ranked No. 1 in New
England by the New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association,
but now have loss consecutive game for the second time this
season.
Down 2-1 in the bottom of the second, Clark took the lead for good
on a two-run home run by Kevin Kopec (Katonah,
N.Y.). The Cougars extended that lead to 3-1 in the fourth on
Shawn Lamothe's (Bellingham, Mass.) solo blast,
his team-leading fourth of the season.
The teams each scored single runs in their next at-bats, with
Clark's run coming on a DeLorenzo double and the Beavers' coming on
a Sean Cleary home run.
The Cougars then exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the
sixth, forcing Babson starter, Jeff Buress from the game. Reliever
Austin Dadio, struggled as well, getting just one out in the inning
while giving up five runs. Big blows in the inning included a
pinch-hit double by Andrew Agostini (Williamstown,
Mass.), a two-run single by Peter Lewis (Gardiner,
Maine) and another RBI double by DeLorenzo.
With the Cougars ahead 13-3, Babson didn't go away, scratching
across runs in the seventh, eighth and ninth to make things
interesting. First, freshman John Bothelo crushed his first career
homerun, then the Beavers pushed three more runs across in the
eighth highlighted by an RBI double by Travis Jonasson and a
run-scoring single by Peter O'Toole.
Clark got their final run in the eighth when Phil
DiMarco (Bellingham, Mass.) led off the inning with a
triple to right center and then came around to score on Kopec's
double, making the score 14-8.
Babson then scored three more runs in the ninth and had a runner on
second base with two outs when reliever Andrew LeBlanc (Farmington, Conn.) struck out the Bothelo looking
to end the game.
Clark starter Jon Merritt (Milton, Mass.), who
tossed seven innings, scattered six hits, picked up his fourth win
of the season.
In addition to DeLorenzo's performance, DiMarco, Kopec and
Ronald Bathrick (North Haven, Conn.) all had three
hits.
Bothelo drove in four runs for the Beavers, while Jake Bartlett had
three hits and two runs scored.
Babson, now 15-5 and 6-2 in NEWMAC action, returns to the diamond
on Wednesday for their third game in as many days with a 3:30 p.m.
matchup with Endicott, while the Cougars (11-9, 3-3 NEWMAC) visit
Wheaton on Thursday.
