Box Score Worcester, Mass. – Powered by two goals apiece from
sophomore Mel Melkonian (Worcester, Mass.) and
freshman Talia Fish (Philadelphia, Pa.), Clark
knocked off Western New England College 5-1 in field hockey action
on Thursday evening.
Melkonian, who added a pair of assists to her totals, scored the
game's first goal just 1:27 in when she stole a crossing pass
and found herself all alone against Golden Bear goalkeeper Brittany
O'Brien who was unable to stop her 12 th goal of the
season.
Clark was at it again less than five minutes later when Fish
poked home a rebound off of a Melkonian attempt for a 2-0
advantage.
Sophomore Madeleine Lutts (Salem, Mass.) made
it a 3-0 Cougar edge when she banged home an unassisted tally at
the 8:09 mark.
Western New England finally broke through when Jaynie Mueller
converted a penalty shot for the Golden Bears' lone tally
midway through the first period.
Ahead 3-1 less than ten minutes into the second half, Melkonian
rattled the back of the cage for the second time with an unassisted
score at 45:32.
Fish then capped the scoring with help from Melkonian a little
more than a minute later to mark her first career multi-goal
contest.
Kate McGrath (Wilmington, Mass.) turned back
seven shots for the win, while O'Brien and Kaitlyn Hall
combined to make seven stops of their own.
With the victory, Clark improves to 5-2 on the year, while WNEC
slips to 3-5. The Cougars return to the field on Saturday against
Wheaton College in Rehoboth, Mass. The Golden Bears will next be in
action on Saturday as well when they visit the University of New
England.
