Box Score Worcester, Mass. – Junior Molly
Meehan (Scotch Plains, N.J.) scored the game's lone
goal in the 55th minute, lifting host Clark to a thrilling 1-0 win
over No. 19 Wheaton College on Saturday afternoon in New England
Women's and Men's Athletic Conference women's soccer action.
The win for the Cougars' snaps the Lyons' season-opening
nine-game unbeaten streak and marks their first goal against
Wheaton since 2005.
Meehan's goal was also the first score the Lyons have allowed
since September 12 – a span of four games.
The shutout loss for Wheaton was their first since 2008 to
Springfield and is just their second loss on the road in regular
season NEWMAC play since 2007.
Both teams had excellent scoring opportunities in the first half
but neither could convert. Off of a corner kick, Wheaton's
Nicole Sherman (Wilton, Conn.) had a point blank
shot that was turned away by Joanna
Clark (Windham, Maine) and then Alessia
Viscomi's (Newton, Mass.) attempt on the rebound went high
over the crossbar.
The Cougars' opportunity came via freshman Lucia
Pantuosco (Somers, Conn.) who had a shot from within
the box but her shot was stopped by Kerry Condon
(Whitman, Mass.) with less than two minutes remaining in the
half.
Meehan's goal came following an outstanding play by Janelle
Pasternack (North Brookfield, Mass.) in the midfield.
With a Wheaton player on the attack up the right sideline,
Pasternack stole the ball and dribbled down the field before
sending a perfect ball to the middle that Meehan deposited over
Condon's outstretched arms in the upper right corner.
Joanna Clark turned back four shots to collect the shutout
– her third of the season and the 23rd of her career.
Now at 4-4 overall and 1-1 in league play, Clark also snapped
its own three-game slide, while the Lyons fall to 8-1-1, 1-1 in
NEWMAC play.
The Cougars return to the field on Thursday when they play
another regional power – Western Connecticut beginning at
6:00 p.m., while Wheaton will visit Lesley on Thursday as well.
