Box Score Worcester, Mass. – Clark sophomore
Mel Melkonian (Worcester, Mass.) scored a
career-high five goals – including the Cougars first four
tallies – en route to a 7-2 win over visiting New England
College on Saturday afternoon at Granger Turf Field.
The win for Clark avenges a 2-1 loss to the Pilgrims a season
ago and pushes their record to 2-0 for the first time since
2004.
For Melkonian, it gives her 26 career goals in just 18 games and
60 career points good for 13th place on the school's all-time
list.
The scoring started in the opening moments as Melkonian recorded
her first goal less than four minutes into the contest.
Emily Kuchta (Norwalk, Conn.) responded for the Pilgrims at the
21:23 mark, but Melkonian put the Cougars up for good with a goal
with less than a minute left in the first half.
Melkonian was back at it again to start the second half when she
found the back of the cage, upping the Clark edge to 3-1.
Her fourth goal, which came on the rebound of her own shot,
seemed to put New England College away, but the Pilgrims answered
with a tally from Samantha Escobar (Rumney, N.H.) to keep the
visitors close.
The Cougars, however, scored the contest's final three
goals to end any hope of a comeback.
Katherine Rowe (Fountain Valley, Va.), who
scored Clark's lone goal against NEC last year, registered
her first of the season and freshman Erin
O'Neil (Willington, Conn.) notched the first of her
career.
Fittingly, it was Melkonian who put a cap on the day's
scoring, recording her fifth score at the 65:52 mark.
Kate McGrath (Wilmington, Mass.) made five
saves in goal to pick up her second win, while the netminding
combination of Courtney Duquette (Enfield, Conn.) and Molly Wilcox
(Northfield, N.H.) made ten saves for the Pilgrims.
Clark returns to the field on Tuesday evening when they host
UMass-Dartmouth, while New England College will look for their
first win of the season on Wednesday when they visit Wellesley
College.
