Box Score Brunswick, Maine – Host Bowdoin College extended its winning streak to nine games with a dominating defensive performance that saw them force 32 turnovers and sprint past Clark University 82-46 in the final game of the 2011 Bowdoin College Classic on Monday evening.
The Polar Bears, who entered the contest ranked 21st in the latest D3hoops.com national poll, improved to 9-1, while the Cougars drop their fourth straight contest and now sit at 2-9.
In addition to their defensive effort, Bowdoin controlled the interior, outscoring Clark 46-10 in the paint and recorded a season-best 22 steals.
The Cougars managed to stay within shouting distance until late in the first period when the Polar Bears closed the half on a 17-6 run to carry a 45-26 lead into intermission.
Bowdoin put the game away in the opening minutes of the second stanza with a 16-5 run that made the score 61-31 with a little more than 11 minutes remaining.
The Polar Bears shot 47 percent from the field for the game while holding the Cougars to just 32 percent, including 26 percent in the final 20 minutes.
Katie Bergeron paced the Bowdoin attack with 15 points, seven steals and five assists, while reserve Nicole Coombes added 15 points as well to go along with seven rebounds and four steals.
Megan Grondin (Cumberland, Maine), who was also named to the All-Classic team, led Clark with nine points.
Clark will return to the hardwood on Wednesday when they return to NEWMAC play with a 6:00 p.m. matchup at MIT.
