Box Score Springfield, Mass. - Senior Jackie Moscardelli tallied a goal and an assist to lead the Springfield College women's soccer team to a 3-1 win against Clark University in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Tuesday night at Brock-Affleck Field.
The Pride improve to 10-3-1 overall and 6-0-1 in NEWMAC play as it re-entered the national rankings today and stands at 21st in the NSCAA National Poll. Clark falls to 5-8-2 overall and 3-3-1 in the conference. The victory sets up a key showdown on Saturday when the Pride take on Babson in a rematch of last season's NEWMAC Championship contest.
Midway through the first half, the Pride got on the scoreboard. Jenelle Jahoda threw the ball in to freshman Kelly Ziogas, who delivered a long pass to Moscardelli right in front of the Clark net. Moscardelli corralled the ball in stride and fired a shot past Clark goalie Audrey Eisemann (Worcester, Mass.) for the game's first goal in the 20th minute.
Less than two minutes into the second half, Springfield extended its lead. Moscardelli led a break in transition and found Katie Mantie up ahead. Mantie took two dribbles and gently lifted a shot over the outstretched reach of Eisemann for the Pride's second goal and a 2-0 lead.
The Pride attack continued to keep pushing and struck again in the 59th minute as Courtney Letourneau and Erica Donnelly connected on some great teamwork to give Springfield a 3-0 advantage. After Letourneau dropped a pass to Donnelly, Donnelly immediately back-heeled a pass in return, which Letourneau collected and fired from thirty yards out for the score.
The Cougars would get one back at the 67:14 mark. Off of a Pride turnover in the its zone, sophomore Afra Danai (Amherst, Mass.) gained possession and flipped an arcing shot over Pride goalie Erin Greenstein's reach to cut the deficit to 3-1.
Springfield had the edge in total shots, 14-11, and corner kicks, 4-2. Cougar goalie Audrey Eisemann grabbed four saves while Pride stopper Greenstein snared two of her own.
Clark returns to the field on Saturday when they host Mount Holyoke at 2:00 p.m.
