Cougars Get Key Win On Senior Day

Worcester, Mass. - Junior Bryan Vayda (Sturbridge, Mass.) led Clark's balanced scoring attack with 14 points to go with a team-high seven rebounds and the Cougars used an 11-2 second half spurt to beat Coast Guard 61-49 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's basketball action on Saturday.

Clark won its second straight to improve to 8-13 overall and 2-6 in the NEWMAC while Coast Guard suffered its fourth straight loss and drops to 8-12 overall and 3-6 in conference play.

Prior to the start of the game, Clark honored its two seniors - co-captain David Opp (Hudson, Mass.) and team manager Josh Cantor (West Hartford, Conn.).

Coast Guard made its first and only three-pointer of the game, after missing its first eight, when sophomore Ed Gailor connected with 11:05 left which started a 7-0 spurt as the Bears pulled to with one at 36-35 with 9:10 left.

Clark then used its 11-2 run capped on a pair of free throws by freshman Jake Gubitose (Fiskdale, Mass.) with 7:13 left for a 47-37 edge and controlled play down the stretch for the win.

Junior D.J. Bailey (Palmer, Mass.) added a career-high 13 points while junior Mitch Renshaw (Rutland, Mass.) and sophomore Travis Curley (Trumbull, Conn.) each added 11 points for Clark.

Senior Jevon James registered his sixth double-double of the season as he led Coast Guard with 21 points and 14 rebounds while freshman Kevin Sowers was also in double figures for the Bears with 11 points.

Freshman Devonte Weems had a career-high ten rebounds for Coast Guard.

Clark shot 43.8 percent from the floor (21-for-48) while making four of 11 from three-point range. The Bears shot just 32.6 percent (15-46) and made just one of nine from behind the arc.

Both teams got off to a sluggish start, Coast Guard led 9-3 with 12:47 left in the first half before Clark scored seven straight capped by a Vayda basket for a 10-9 lead with 10:57 left in the opening stanza.

Clark used a 9-2 spurt to end the first half turning a 19-19 tie with a 4:01 left into a 28-21 lead at halftime.

Coast Guard struggled in the first half shooting just 27.3 percent from the floor (6-22), and 56.3 percent from the foul line (9-16) while missing all seven 3-point attempts.

The Cougars return to action on Wednesday when they host MIT in their final home game of the season.
