Cougars Get Split With Coast Guard

New London, Conn. - Senior Graham Sherman's RBI single in the seventh tied the game before freshman Lukas Laplante's RBI single gave Coast Guard a 4-3 come-from-behind win in eight innings over Clark in the opener before senior Scott Hollingsworth's (Tilton, N.H.) RBI double in the fifth broke a 2-2 tie as the Cougars salvaged a split with a 3-2 win in the nightcap of a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader played at Coast Guard with Clark as the home team in both games.

In the opener, Clark, as it was on Friday's opening game of this three-game series, was one out away before Sherman tied the game 3-3 with a single to stun the Cougars for a second straight day.

Laplante's RBI single to left in the top of the eighth scored sophomore Eric Gerken who collided with the third baseman and was awarded home on obstruction. Gerken drew a two-out walk and moved to second on an error.

Sophomore Tyler Vieira pitched the eighth and final inning allowing just a walk to pickup his third save of the season. Senior Jesse Karr went seven solid innings allowing just four hits and two earned runs while walking one and striking out two to improve to 2-0 on the season.

The Bears (7-4, 2-1) scored twice in the top of the first on a two-run single by sophomore Mike Massaro.

Sophomore Derek Dubois (Haverhill, Mass.) (2-1) took the loss as he went the distance for Clark and allowed just five hits and three earned runs while walking three and fanning nine.

Clark (8-5, 1-2) took the lead with three runs in the second as freshman Brian Sullivan (Auburn, Mass.), junior Nicholas Kellogg (Florence, Mass.) and Hollingsworth began the inning with three straight singles, the final being an RBI single. The Cougars tied the game at 2-2 on a wild pitch and took the lead on a sacrifice fly by junior Matthew Bohl (Amherst, Mass.).

In game two, Clark took a 1-0 lead in the second on an RBI single by sophomore James Cadogan (Ipswich, Mass.) before the Bears took the lead with two in the fourth on RBI singles by junior Eddie Kalankiewicz and Massaro.

Clark took the lead for good in the home half of the fifth as sophomore Charles Sakany (Vero Beach, Fla.) tied the game with an RBI single before Hollingsworth's RBI double to right which proved to be the game winner.

Senior Benjamin Seel (Oakland, Maine) worked the first five innings allowing four hits and two earned runs while walking three and fanning five to pickup the win. Senior Robert Lopez (Copake, N.Y.), who took the loss on Friday, picked up his first save of the season as he pitched around an error in the seventh.

Sophomore Derek Petty (0-2) allowed six hits and three earned runs in five innings with three walks and five strikeouts, but took the loss for the Bears.

Meanwhile, Cadogan had two hits for Clark in the game two win.

The Cougars are back in action on Tuesday when they visit Wheaton at 3:00 p.m.
