Clark Downed By Wheaton, 14-7

Norton, Mass. - The Wheaton College baseball team won a home opener for the sixth straight season on Tuesday afternoon while collecting its first New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) victory of the season, as the Lyons scored 14 of the game's first 15 runs en route to a 14-7 victory over Clark University at Sidell Stadium.

Receiving national votes according to today's D3baseball.com poll, Wheaton, which had its three-game winning streak come to an end, improved to 5-4 overall and 1-3.  Clark fell to 8-6 and 1-3.

Sophomore hurler Frank Holbrook collected his second win in as many starts, surrendering three hits with one earned run in seven innings.  He fanned two batters and walked two.

Dan Haugh paced Wheaton's 14-hit onslaught by going 4-for-4 with four runs and a double.  Hadi Raad was 3-for-4 with three RBI and a pair of doubles, while classmate Eric Laliberte had two hits while driving in two.

For the visitors, who tacked on six runs in the eighth inning, Andrew LeBlanc (Farmington, Conn.) was saddled with the loss, yielding six runs, five earned, on five hits with three strikeouts and three walks in two innings. 

Andrew Agostini (Williamstown, Mass.) batted 3-for-5 with two runs and a double, while junior Jeremy Gerber (Amherst, Mass.) was 2-for-3 with two RBI.

Wheaton jumped out in front from the outset with five runs on three hits in the first inning, with Raad delivering the big blow, as he sent a bases-clearing double into the gap in left center.  Haugh and Laliberte also had RBI in the frame.  After tacking on single runs in the second and third innings, the Lyons scored twice in the fourth before making the score 12-0 courtesy of a three-run sixth.

 The Cougars scored six runs in the sixth as the Lyons committed three errors and James Cadogan (Ipswich, Mass.) had the big hit - a two-run double in the inning.

Clark will look to return to the win column on Friday when they host Rivier College in their home opener slated to begin at 3:00 p.m.
