Clark Races Past Rivier, 14-4

Box Score

Worcester, Mass. – Host Clark University opened up the home portion of their 2011 schedule with a 14-4 win over visiting Rivier College in non-league baseball action on Friday afternoon on Granger Field.

The win for the Cougars (9-6) is their second straight over the Raiders (0-5), following last season's 26-9 victory.

Clark jumped on Rivier starter Ford Coates (Raymond, N.H.) from the outset, getting five runs in the bottom of the first, highlighted by a monster three-run homerun from freshman Brian Sullivan (Auburn, Mass.).

The Raiders got on board in the third after J.J. Montello (Nashua, N.H.) ledoff the inning with a single and came around to score on an RBI single by Tyler Eaton (Waterville, Maine).

Shawn Lamothe (Bellingham, Mass.) got that run back with a leadoff homerun in the fourth to make the score 6-1.

Rivier then scored three runs in the seventh capped by a two-run homerun by Kyle Bowser (Newington, N.H.) closing the gap to 6-4.

Clark answered back in the bottom of the frame with six runs of their own, including a grand slam by junior Nick Kellogg (Florence, Mass.), to get some breathing room at 12-4.

The Cougars tacked on a pair of runs in the eighth on a two-run Matt Bohl (Amherst, Mass.) single.

Derek Dubois (Haverhill, Mass.) continued the excellent start to his sophomore season, improving to 3-1 following his six-inning, seven strikeout performance.

Kellogg paced the Cougar offensive attack with two hits and four RBI, while Sullivan and Scott Hollingsworth (Tilton, N.H.) each also had a pair of hits.

Bowser went 2-for-5 with two RBI for the Raiders, while Eaton and Kevin Weaver (Hudson, N.H.) each also had two hits.

Coates took the loss for Rivier going four innings and allowing seven runs, only four of which we earned.

Clark returns to the diamond on Saturday with a home doubleheader against Norwich, while the Raiders will look for their first win of the season with a twinbill against Saint Joseph's of Brooklyn.
