Worcester, Mass. – Behind Mike Aiello's (Scituate, R.I.) third set tiebreak win, visiting Rhode Island College defeated Clark University in non-league men's tennis action on Monday evening at Corash Tennis Courts.
With the match tied at 4-4, Aiello was locked in a battle with the Cougars' Aaron Chin (Hong Kong, China). After taking the first set 6-4, Aiello dropped the second 6-2, before the final set needed a tiebreak to decide the match. Aiello, proved to be too much for Chin, however, wrapping up the match with a 7-1 tiebreak decision.
Clark won two of the three doubles matches, including Diego Angel (Lima, Peru) and Harris Rollinger (Lexington, Mass.) winning at No. 1 by a 9-7 score over Nathan Rebello (Pawtucket, R.I.) and Alex Werchadlo (Woonsocket, R.I.).
Spencer Brightman (Sudbury, Mass.) and Bram Smith (Becket, Mass.) were also victorious at No. 3 doubles, knocking off Jack Adamo (Warwick, R.I.) and Brad Lamoureux (Pawtucket, R.I.) by virtue of an 8-2 score.
Angel posted a straight set win at No. 1 singles (6-1, 7-5) over Rebello to get the Cougars off and running, but Werchaldo answered back with a straight set win of his own (6-1, 6-2) over Rollinger at No. 2.
Dan Paradee (Gardiner, Maine) collected a win (6-1, 6-0) over Jason Morin (East Providence, R.I.) at No.5 and Nathan Maltais (Seabrook, N.H.) was victorious over Brian Gil (North Providence, R.I.) at No. 6 (6-0, 6-3), but Aiello's heroics pushed the Anchormen to the win.
Rhode Island College improves to 5-4 overall, while the Cougars dip to 1-8. The Anchormen return to action on Tuesday with a home match against instate rival Johnson & Wales, while Clark will look to return to the win column on Wednesday against Anna Maria.
