Lyons Roll To 8-1 Win Over Clark

Norton, Mass.- The Wheaton College men's tennis team improved to 3-0 in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) for the first time since 2007 following an 8-1 victory over visiting Clark University on Saturday at the Clark Tennis Courts.

Stretching their winning streak out to six matches, the Lyons are now 7-4 overall.  The Cougars fell to 1-7 and 0-2.

Wheaton took a 2-1 edge after doubles play, as senior Gregory Poulin and freshman Dan Sharon cruised to an 8-1 triumph at two before senior Harry Altman and freshman Ned Terrace won 8-2 at three.

The Lyons' lone loss came at first doubles, with senior Brian Krantz and junior Neal Oliver dropping a hard-fought 9-7 decision to sophomores Diego Angel (Lima, Peru) and Harris Rollinger (Lexington, Mass.).

The hosts collected five straight-set wins in singles play, as Poulin, Sharon and Altman allowed just three games each in the third, fourth, and fifth slots, respectively.  Krantz recorded a 6-3, 6-1 win over Rollinger at two, sophomore Dennis Scarpa emerged victorious by a 6-4, 6-0 count at six over Nathan Maltais (Seabrook, N.H.), while Oliver overcame a 6-0 loss in his opening set at one before turning back Angel with a 7-5 second-set win and a 10-5 victory in the super tiebreaker.

The Cougars will return to the court on Monday with a home match against Rhode Island College beginning at 4:00 p.m.
