Grondin Stays Hot As Clark Downs Bears, 84-59

New London, Conn.— Clark University scored a season-high 84 points while shooting 61 percent from the floor and the visiting Cougars rolled to a 84-59 win over host Coast Guard in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon.

Sophomore Megan Grondin (Cumberland, Maine) led all scorers with 20 points  - her third straight contest with 20 points or more - while classmate Emily Reilly (Marlboro, Mass.) added 16 and senior Kate Minster (Manchester, England) finished with 14.

That trio combined for 50 points, shooting a sizzling 83 percent from the floor (19 of 23), including five for five from three-point range. Grondin was nine of 12, Reilly was five of six and made her only trey while Minister was a perfect five for five from the floor and four of four from three-point range.

After connecting on 56 percent of their shots in the first 20 minutes, Clark shot even better in the final 20, making 17-of-25 shots.

The game was tied 21-21 with 8:26 left in the first half before the Cougars used a 20-4 spurt to end the half taking a 41-25 lead at halftime. Minister had a pair of three-pointers in the run while Grondin had three buckets.

Clark, which won its third straight to improve to 13-6 overall and 9-3 in the NEWMAC, controlled play in the second half and led by as many as 38 at 79-41 with 5:10 left before the Bears outscored the Cougars 18-5 the rest of the way.

Sophomore Ashleigh Condon (Hull, Mass.) was also in double figure for Clark with 12 points and a game-high five assists while Reilly added four assists. Freshman Victoria Russo (Arlington, Mass.) led the way with seven rebounds to go with a career-best six points.

Sophomore Kaitlin Ward led the Bears with 14 points while freshman Brittney Zimmerman added 13 points in the loss. Freshman Jamie Waterman led the way with nine rebounds to go with her six points. Freshman Dani Knox added eight points and a game-high four steals for the Bears.

Coast Guard shot 38.2 percent from the floor (26-28) while making three of 10 from behind the arc.

The Bears drop to 5-11 overall and 1-11 in conference play.

Clark will host Mount Holyoke on Wednesday beginning at 7:00 p.m.
