Box Score Northampton, Mass. – Visiting Clark University got a pair of goals from Janelle Pasternack (North Brookfield, Mass.) and ran their unbeaten streak to five games with a 2-1 win over Smith College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's soccer action on Saturday.
The Cougars see their record improve to 8-7-1 overall and 5-3 in league play, while the Pioneers dip to 6-8 and 4-3 in conference action.
With the win, Clark guarantees itself of postseason play for the second consecutive season. Smith, meanwhile is eliminated from the conference tournament and is now 6-8 overall.
A home contest to open the postseason is still in the cards for the Scarlet and White but that wont be decided until a matchup with Wheaton College next Saturday.
The Cougars got on the board in the 28th minute when Pasternack notched her fifth goal of the season at 27:10.
Things stayed that way until the 58th minute when Pasternack took a feed from Afra Danai (Amherst, Mass.) and notched her first career multi-goal contest.
Pasternack actually had a bid for a hat trick in the 62nd minute when her shot rang off the crossbar.
Smith refused to go away and finally got closer when Lizzy Jarrett (Ellicott City, Md.) collected her first collegiate goal at 78:03.
Cody Norris (Auburn, Mass.) made four saves in net for the Pioneers, who were outshot 18-6. Gabby Paolini (North Potomac, Md.) didn't need to make any saves as the Cougar defense stood tall.
The Cougars have two regular season games left starting with Wednesday's non-league matchup with Emerson College. Smith on the other hand will also play its final two contests at home beginning with a Tuesday meeting with Fitchburg State.
