Box Score Worcester, Mass. – Led by an excellent service game and some timely hitting, host Clark University collected a 3-1 win over New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) rival Wheaton College on Tuesday evening at the Kneller Athletic Center. Game scores were 25-21, 25-19, 23-25 and 25-19.
With the win the Cougars improve to 10-13 overall and 2-6 in conference play, while the Lyons dip to 9-21 and 2-6 in league action. The ten wins for Clark, meanwhile, equals its win total from a season ago, when they had a 13-player roster compared to the eight that compose the 2012 squad.
The Cougars were paced by Shannon Glass-Smythe (Albuquerque, N.M.) who totaled nine kills and eight service aces and Rachel Spera (North Hollywood, Calif.) who handed out 26 assists.
In the first set, Wheaton raced out to a 7-1 lead but a solo block by Spera followed by a Spera kill, gave Clark the lead back at 12-11.
Spera then went on the serve after the game was tied at 14-14 and the Cougars found themselves ahead 19-16. An Anne Read (Arundel, Maine) kill pushed the Clark advantage to 21-18, but the Lyons closed the gap to 22-20 before the Cougars took the set, 25-21.
Clark never trailed in the second set and held leads of 13-9 and 20-15 before taking a 25-19 decision.
Wheaton roared back to take the third set nail biter, 25-23, but Clark answered back in the fourth to pick up the conference win.
The Lyons were led by Arieanne Creighton (Brookline, N.H.) who finished with a match-high ten kills and Dierdre Wilson (Aptos, Calif.) who ended with nine kills and a match-best 16 digs.
Page Gustofson (South Lake Tahoe, Calif.) dished out 22 assists, while Jackie Kochiss (Milford, Conn.) handed out 13 of her own.
Wheaton has two more regular season matches remaining on its schedule beginning with a home contest against Emmanuel College on Thursday and another home contest on Saturday against WPI.
Clark, meanwhile, hosts Western Connecticut State on Thursday and the visits Babson to close out the season.
