Box Score Worcester, Mass. – Visiting Wellesley College, a team sitting just outside the ACVA Top 25, won for the 21st time in 23 matches this season with a 3-0 win over Clark University in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) volleyball action on Tuesday evening.
The Blue, who sit atop the conference standings with a perfect 6-0 mark, won by match scores of 25-13, 25-17 and 25-12 in picking up their 12th straight set victory of the season.
Clark, meanwhile, slips to 6-11 overall and 1-5 in conference action and has now dropped eight of their last nine matches.
Wellesley opened up the first set with a 10-4 spurt highlighted by a trio of kills from Courtney Lang (Seattle, Wash.). That lead grew to 14-7 following a monstrous left-handed kill by Caitlin Laughlin (St. Louis Park, Minn.) and the Blue's advantage ballooned to as much as 18-8 before they settled on a 25-13 win.
Clark took very early leads in game two but Wellesley clawed back and took a 9-5 lead that jumped to 15-10. The teams traded points up until a 20-15 edge for the Blue and they then ran off five of the next seven to take the game.
Game three proved to be more of the same for Wellesley. With the score tied 4-4, they went on a ten-point run that saw their lead pushed to 14-4. Clark never got closer than ten points the rest of the way as the Blue collected the 25-12 win.
Lang finished with a match-high 13 kills on a sizzling .667 hitting percentage, while Hillary Ayers (Coeur d'Alene, Idaho) and Isabel Custodio (Powell, Ohio) combined for 27 assists.
The Cougars were paced by Shannon Glass-Smythe (Albuquerque, N.M.) whose five kills put her over 200 for the season and Rachel Spera (North Hollywood, Calif.) who recorded match-highs of 16 assists and eight digs.
Clark returns to action on Saturday when they take part in a tri-match that features host Becker College and Daniel Webster.
Wellesley hits the hardwood again on Saturday as well when they travel to Bowdoin for a tri-match that includes NEWMAC foe Coast Guard.
