Clark Gets By Worcester State, 3-1

Worcester, Mass. – Visiting Clark snapped its brief two-game losing streak with a 3-1 win over crosstown rival Worcester State on Tuesday evening at John Coughlin Memorial Stadium in non-league field hockey action.

Mel Melkonian (Worcester, Mass.) had two goals and Madeleine Lutts (Salem, Mass.) added another as the Cougars improved to 7-5 overall, while the Lancers dipped to 2-10.

Melkonian got Clark on the board in the fifth minute when she scored off a rebound of a Lutts attempt at 4:37.

Lutts scored her 13th goal of the season nine minutes later when she notched an unassisted tally at 15:36, giving the Cougars a 2-0 lead.

Worcester State closed the gap to 2-1 when Katelyn Abber scored off of a rebound at 22:00.

Things stayed that way until midway through the second half when Melkonian scored on one her patented breakaway for her 24th marker of the season at 45:53.

The Cougars held a 21-7 edge in shots but the Lancers got a superb effort in net from Rebecca Mullen who turned back 16 shots.

Jordannah Saunders (Scarborough, Maine) meanwhile, made four saves for Clark to pick up the win.

With five games remaining in the regular season, the Cougars will play their next three at home beginning with Saturday's contest against WPI.
