Second Half Drought Hands Cougars First Loss

Box Score

Waltham, Mass. – Brandeis University put four players in double figures led by Youri Dascy's 17 points and 11 rebounds and the host Judges improved to 4-1 with a 67-58 win over Clark University in non-league men's basketball action on Tuesday evening.

The Cougars (3-1) dropped their first game of the season after opening up with three straight victories. Clark was paced by Brian Vayda (Sturbridge, Mass.), who finished with a game-high 24 points to go along with seven rebounds and four steals.

Dascy, meanwhile, did most of his damage from in close, scoring 12 of his 17 points in the second half to help the Judges to a 22-16 edge in points in the paint.

After a Tyler Veretto (South Windsor, Conn.) baseline finish knotted the game at 24-24 with less than four minutes left in the first half, Brandeis went on a 16-4 run over a six minute span than gave them a 40-28 lead less than two minutes into the second half.

The Cougars went cold in the final 20 minutes, connecting on just 24 percent of their attempts (8-for-33) and went more than nine minutes between baskets.

Clark stayed close courtesy of their free throw accuracy, going 14-for-15 in the second half and 17-for-20 in the game.

With all that said, the Cougars were still within striking distance with a little more than a minute to go after a pair of Jake Gubitose (Fiskdale, Mass.) free throws, but Gabriel Moton connected on a rightside three-pointer with 32 seconds left that ended any hopes of a comeback by Clark.

Alex Stoyle added 14 points and six rebounds for Brandeis, who also got 12 points from Ben Bartoldus. Moton recorded a double-double with 13 points and ten rebounds but also committed a game-high eight turnovers.

Clark will return to action on Thursday with their home opener against Worcester State. Tip-off is slated for 6:00 p.m.
