Box Score Worcester, Mass. – Luis Bridtter (Stamford, Conn.) converted a driving layup and made the subsequent free throw snapping a tie game with less than a minute to go lifting visiting Western Connecticut State to a hard fought 68-63 win over Clark University in non-league men's basketball action on Tuesday evening.
Coming off of a 21-win season in 2011-12, the Colonials have won two of their last three games and now sit at 2-7. Clark, meanwhile, enters the winter break at 5-4.
Bridtter's conversion snapped a 16-8 run by the host Cougars who were down eight with less than ten minutes remaining.
Clark began their comeback with free throws from Brian Vayda (Sturbridge, Mass.) and a finish on the break by D.J. Bailey (Palmer, Mass.) off an excellent feed by John Karas (South Glastonbury, Conn.).
The lead was down to two at 57-55 after the Karas to Bailey connection worked again, but Phil Starks (Bloomfield, Conn.) – who made several difficult mid-range jumpers – dropped in a hoop to keep the Colonials ahead.
The Cougars finally knotted the game up at 63-63 when Travis Curley (Trumbull, Conn.) converted a three-point play after a strong finish at the basket with exactly a minute left.
Following Bridtter's game-changing three-point play, Clark still had an opportunity to even the score, but Curley's high-arching three-point attempt grazed the front of the rim and Shawn Mobilio (Seymour, Conn.) grabbed the rebound and later made the two free throws to seal the game.
The Cougars were undone by a 35 percent second half shooting performance (10-for-29), while Western Connecticut made half of their attempts (15-of-30) in the final 20 minutes.
Clark held a 44-40 edge on the glass, but WCSU committed just eight turnovers and had 14 assists on their 21 baskets.
Mobilio led a balanced Colonial attack with 13 points, seven rebounds, six assists and three steals, while Starks – who missed a huge portion of the first half with foul trouble – finished with ten points as did Leroy Mayers (Bronx, N.Y.).
Bridtter chipped in with nine points and five boards, while both Joseph Groski (Danbury, Conn.) and Tre'Von Perry (Waterbury, Conn.) added eight apiece.
The Cougars were paced for the second straight game by Bailey, who notched his first double-double of the season with game-highs of 20 points and ten rebounds. Vayda totaled 15 points and eight rebounds and Nicholas DaPrato (Marshfield, Mass.) came off the bench to record ten points in 19 minutes of action.
Both teams will return to action on December 29. The Colonials play host to the College of New Jersey, while Clark faces Wentworth Institute at the NYU Holiday Classic.
