Box Score Brunswick, Maine – Visiting Clark University shot just 16 percent from the field in the opening half and never recovered as host Bowdoin College collected a 58-53 in the championship game of the 2012 Bowdoin Holiday Invitational at Morrell Gymnasium on Sunday.
Bowdoin was paced by three players in double figures, including 11 from Tournament MVP Kaitlin Donahoe, who also dished out four assists and collected five rebounds. The Polar Bears have won four of their last five games and improve to 5-4 with the win. Clark falls to 7-3 with the setback.
Kirsten Prue scored 13 points, including 4-of-5 from three-point range, to also earn All-Tournament honors for Bowdoin.
Emily Reilly (Marlboro, Mass.) led Clark with 16 points and was the Cougars' representative on the All-Tournament squad while Regis' Claire Ramonas and Clarkson's Ashley Loggins were also named.
Bowdoin held Clark to just 5-of-31 shooting in the opening half and used an 11-2 surge late in the period to take a 27-21 edge at intermission.
Reilly hit a three-pointer to close the gap to 27-24 immediately after the break, but Bowdoin replied with a 10-0 run, sparked by consecutive three-pointers from Megan Phelps and Prue, to extend its lead to 13 points, 37-24, with 16:20 to go.
Clark could get no closer than eight points until an 8-0 run trimmed the Bowdoin lead to 47-40 with under four minutes to go.
The Cougars had a chance to cut into the lead further, but Bowdoin forced a turnover and pushed the lead back to double digits on another Prue trifecta with 2:01 to go. Clark hit a pair of three-pointers in the final minute to close the final gap to five points.
Bowdoin held a 45-35 edge on the glass and held the Cougars to just 24 percent shooting for the contest.
Reilly was the lone Cougar in double figures but four others – Brooke Brennan (Weston, Mass.), Ashleigh Condon (Hull, Mass.), Kelsey Giedymin (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and Megan Grondin (Cumberland, Maine) – all finished with eight points each.
Clark will host Tufts in their next outing on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m.
