Box Score Worcester, Mass. – Smith College forced 26 turnovers and put a quartet of players in double figures and the visiting Pioneers outlasted host Clark, 68-62 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's basketball action on Wednesday evening.
With the victory Smith pushes its winning streak to seven games and claims sole possession of second place in the league standings after sweeping the season series with the Cougars.
Rosa Drummond (Rye, N.H.) led the Pioneers with a team-best 19 points – 13 of which came in the second half when Smith outscored Clark, 39-31.
Lizzy BelBruno (Hanover, N.H.) added 15 points and five assists, while Maddie Page (Arvada, Colo.) came off the bench and contributed 13 points, seven rebounds and six steals in 21 minutes of action.
Clark actually took a 31-29 lead into halftime despite committing 22 of their turnovers in the opening 20 minutes.
After Megan Grondin (Cumberland, Maine) got free inside for a rebound and putback giving the Cougars a 33-29 edge in the opening minutes of the second half, Smith reeled off 11 straight points highlighted by a pair of baskets from Drummond and a three from BelBruno.
Emily Reilly (Marlboro, Mass.) got the Pioneer lead down to five with a pair of free throws, but Smith answered with an 8-0 spurt that made the score 50-37 with a little more than ten minutes left.
Back-to-back three pointers from Ashleigh Condon (Hull, Mass.) and Reilly brought the Cougars to within five with 44 seconds left.
The lead was still at five after a Grondin basket with 24 seconds left to play and Clark still had hope after Page split a pair of free throws six seconds later. Kate Minister (Manchester, England) somehow ended up unguarded on the left wing and her bomb from a few feet behind the arc rimmed out ending any hopes of a comeback.
Neither team shot the ball well, with Clark (38.3) holding a slight edge (34.9). Smith meanwhile held a 31-15 edge in free throws attempted and a 21-11 advantage in free throws made.
The Cougars corralled 47 rebounds to the Pioneers' 42, but Smith had 21 points off of turnovers and outscored Clark 32-26 in the paint.
Devon Quattrocchi (Brewster, N.Y.) added 11 points, five assists, three rebounds and three steals for the Pioneers who join Babson as the only two teams to defeat Clark on its home court this season (8-2).
Reilly led all scorers with 22 points and nine rebounds, while Condon, who was saddled with three early fouls, finished with 15 points and four assists.
Grondin chipped in with 13 points for the Cougars, while Ellie Giles (Charlottesville, Va.) was excellent on the glass, totaling 15 boards, six points and three blocked shots.
Clark, now 14-8 and in a tie with Wellesley for the third spot in the league standings at 10-5, will play host to Wheaton on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
The Pioneers, meanwhile, move to 17-4 overall and 12-3 in league play. They hit the road for a date with Babson on Saturday as well.
