Cougars Snap Skid With Doubleheader Split

New London, Conn. - Coast Guard junior Derek Petty scattered six hits and allowed an unearned run in the opener while Clark junior Andrew LeBlanc (Farmington, Conn.) went the distance in game two allowing a run on nine hits while striking out 12 as the Bears and Cougars split a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader.

Coast Guard won the opener 2-1 while Clark won the nightcap 8-1.

In the opener, Petty (1-1) walked two and struck out eight in the seven inning complete game to pickup his first win of the season and the Bears scored a run in the second on a sacrifice fly by junior Ed Sella and one more in the third on an RBI single by Tyler Babkiewich for a 2-0 lead.

Clark got its run in the fourth as senior Matthew Bohl (Amherst, Mass.) led off with a single, stole second and scored on a throwing error.

Sophomore Brian Sullivan (Auburn, Mass.) (1-2) went the distance for Clark allowing just four hits and two earned run while walking five and striking out three.

Senior Shawn Lamothe (Bellingham, Mass.) had two hits for Clark in the opener, the only player on either team with multiple hits in the opener.

In game two, Clark scored a run in the first and four in the third for a 5-0 lead and the Cougars rode the arm of LeBlanc to the win.

Freshman Ian Farrell (Bethany, Conn.) had an RBI single in the first before senior Nicholas Kellogg (Florence, Mass.) had a two-run single to highlight the four run third.

The Cougars added single runs in both the fourth and sixth innings both times on RBI singles by Lamothe for a 7-0 lead.

Coast Guard scored its only run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Babkiewich.

 LeBlanc (1-2) walked three and struck out 12 to pickup his first win of the season.

Junior Nate Toll (0-3) took the loss for Coast Guard. He pitched the first six innings and allowed eight hits and seven runs, five earned, while walking three and fanning four.

Junior Curt Barrett allowed just three hits and an unearned run in the final three innings.

Bohl and Lamothe each had three hits in game two for Clark.

Freshman Mike Shannon had three hits for the Bears, the only multiple hitter for Coast Guard in the game two loss.

Coast Guard is now 6-6 overall and 2-1 in league play while Clark is 2-11 overall and 1-2 in NEWMAC play and the Cougars snapped an eight game slide with the win in the nightcap.

Clark will return to the diamond on Tuesday when they host MCLA at 3:00 p.m.
