Box Score New London, Conn .- Visiting Clark University reached the 80-point plateau for the third time this season and extended their winning streak to three games with an 85-64 win over Coast Guard Academy in New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's basketball action on Saturday afternoon.
The win for the Cougars pushes their record to 9-5 overall and they are now 3-0 in league games for the first time since the 2008-09 season.
Coast Guard, meanwhile, has given up 80 points or more to three straight opponents and now stands at 1-12 overall.
The Bears actually came out strong, racing out to a 9-0 lead, but the Cougars rallied and took a 36-28 lead into halftime.
Clark was able to extend their second half lead to 61-43 midway through the second half but three consecutive three point baskets by Coast Guard cut the lead to just 61-52 with 7:10 to play. On the ensuing possession, Greg Marshall was called for a personal foul and a bench technical was assessed to the Bears. The shooter, Jake Gubitose (Fiskdale, Mass.) made three out of the four free throws to push the Clark lead back into double figures at 64-52. Clark was then able to score 21 of the next 33 points to account for the final margin.
For the game, the Cougars shot 50 percent from the field (27-for-54) marking the second time in the last three games that Clark has made at least half of their baskets in a contest.
The Bears were able to stay close to the Cougars courtesy of a 10-for-16 performance from behind the arc led by 5-for-8 showing from Marshall.
Clark controlled the interior, however, holding a 32-25 edge in rebounds and a 30-12 advantage on points in the paint.
Marshall scored 17 of his game-high 21 points in the second half, while Jimmy Knudsen added ten points and eight rebounds for Coast Guard who remains winless in league play (0-4).
The Cougars, meanwhile, had four players reach double figures led by sharpshooter Travis Curley (Trumbull, Conn.), who totaled 17 points, while Brian Vayda (Sturbridge, Mass.) added 15 points, four rebounds and four assists. D.J. Bailey (Palmer, Mass.) and Tyler Veretto (South Windsor, Conn.) each had 11 – a new career-best for the freshman Veretto.
Clark now embarks on a tough stretch over the next 11 days. First they travel to undefeated WPI on Wednesday, they play host to Springfield on Saturday before hosting MIT live on Charter TV-3 on Wednesday, January 23.
