Backcourt Shines In 70-55 Win Over Wheaton

Box Score

Worcester, Mass. – Host Clark University used a pair of excellent all-around performances from its dynamic backcourt of Ashleigh Condon (Hull, Mass.) and Emily Reilly (Marlboro, Mass.) en route to a 70-55 win over Wheaton College in New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon.

The duo combined for 37 points, 12 rebounds and 12 assists on 13-for-21 shooting in leading the Cougars to a win that snapped a brief two-game slide and brings their record to 9-6 overall and 4-4 in conference play.

Wheaton, meanwhile, has now dropped three of their last four and sits at 6-8 overall and 3-5 in league matchups.

Clark came out of the gates strong shooting 56 percent in the first 20 minutes. With the score tied at 15-15 with less than ten minutes, the Cougars ended the half on a 22-10 run sparked by four three-pointers courtesy of Condon, Reilly and a pair from Brooke Brennan (Weston, Mass.).

The Lyons fought back after halftime and cut the Clark advantage down to six at 43-37 after back-to-back three-pointers from Kenzie Kuhn (Glenwood Springs, Colo.) and Rebecca Arnone (Litchfield, N.H.) with 13:24 remaining.

That would be as close as Wheaton would get however, as the Scarlet and White answered back minutes later with a game sealing 13-3 run over a six minute span that saw a seven-point lead balloon to 17 at 62-45 with less than seven minute to play. Condon and Reilly combined for eight of the 13 points during the crucial run as the defense clamped down and held the Lyons without a basket for more than three minutes.

After their hot start, Clark cooled down in the second half but still finished at 47 percent from the field (27-for-57), including a 6-for-14 performance from behind the arc (43 percent).

Wheaton struggled shooting the entire contest connecting on only 31 percent of their attempts from the floor and making just three of their final 12 shots in the game's final ten minutes.

The Cougars controlled the interior, finishing with a 42-38 edge on the glass and a 34-18 advantage in points in the paint.

Clark also had its second straight game of more than 20 assists, handing out 21 on their 27 baskets.

Abbie Brickley (Sandy, Utah) was the lone Lyon in double figures, totaling 12 points and eight rebounds, while Kuhn finished with nine points and five assists and Kiley Shoemaker (Fayetteville, N.Y.) chipped in with six points, a game-high ten rebounds and three blocks.

Reilly led all scorers with 20 points on 7-for-10 shooting to go along with five rebounds and a career-best seven assists. Condon racked up 17 points, seven rebounds and five assists, while Megan Grondin (Cumberland, Maine) added 14 points and four helpers. Brennan, meanwhile, helped out with 11 points and four boards.

The Cougars return to the hardwood on Wednesday with a trip to Babson College, while the Lyons will look to return to the win column with a Monday visit to Tufts.
