Wellesley Holds Off Clark, 1-0

Box Score

Worcester, Mass. – Visiting Wellesley College extended its unbeaten streak to five games with a hard fought 1-0 win over Clark University in New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's soccer action on Tuesday evening at the Granger Soccer Complex.

The Blue improve to 8-7-2 overall and an impressive 5-1-1 in conference contests, while the Cougars have now dropped four straight to slip to 4-11.

Wellesley got all the scoring they would need midway through the first half when Emily Wilson (Portland, Ore.) found a wide open Abby Aldridge (Coronado, Calif.) near the top of the box. She took two quick touches and fired a shot from straight on that whizzed over the outstretched arms of Cougar netminder Gabby Paolini (North Potomac, Md.) at 28:32.

In the early moments of the second half it looked as if the Blue were prime position to add to their lead when LJ Foster (Safety Harbor, Fla.) broke free and sent a blast that Paolini was able to turn back. The rebound came right back to Foster, but her second attempt was blocked by the Clark defense and then cleared away.

Clark's best scoring chance of the night came when Charlotte Mays (Melrose, Mass.) found herself open but her shot was sent away by Kat Goldsmith (Armonk, N.Y.) at 47:23.

The Cougars' had another excellent opportunity in the 86th minute when Janelle Pasternack (North Brookfield, Mass.) turned the corner on the defense and fired a rocket that Goldsmith was again able to stop.

Interestingly enough, the statistics from this contest were pretty even, with Clark holding a 10-9 edge in shots, each goalkeeper made four saves but  the Scarlet and White did have a 7-2 edge in corner kicks.

Wellesley returns home on Saturday to play host to Smith at 1:00 p.m., while the Cougars will look to return to the win column with a road trip to Wheaton on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. as well.
