Box Score Worcester, Mass. - Junior Mary-Lee Barboza scored two goals and sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Puishys stopped four shots as WPI delivered head field hockey coach Lisa Moreau her 100th career collegiate victory in a 3-0 NEWMAC triumph over Clark on Tuesday night at Alumni Field.
The Engineers (5-6, 1-3 NEWMAC) snapped a four-game drought against Clark (7-5, 0-3 NEWMAC) with the last WPI win coming via a 1-0 stroke-off decision on October 4, 2008.
The Engineers held a 1-0 advantage at the break courtesy of a goal late in the opening half by Barboza as she sent home a feed from sophomore Grace Davis for her third of the year.at 31:32. The Engineers doubled up the Cougars 8-4 on shots and were awarded all five penalty corners in the opening half.
With 22:06 showing on the scoreboard in the second half, sophomore Amy Misera notched her fourth goal of the season off a dish from junior Nicole Holmes. At the 63:19 mark, Barboza netted an unassisted marker for her second of the contest and fourth of the year. The hosts held a slim 6-5 advantage on penalty corners and outshot the Cougars 6-3 in the frame.
Clark junior Kiah Murphy (Westport, Mass.), senior Erin O'Neil (Willington, Conn.) and rookie Lauren Mackey (Dublin, N.H.) each took a pair of shots while sophomore Maria Manning (Manchester, N.H.) was credited with one.
Puishys improved to 2-4 while Clark sophomore Christine Tinsman (Prairie Village, Kan.) moved to 6-4 following a six save evening.
Both squads return to NEWMAC action on Saturday at noon against nationally-ranked teams. The Engineers head to No. 14 Wellesley while the Cougars travel to No. 18 MIT.
