Cougars Swept By MIT In NEWMAC Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Worcester, Mass. – MIT, playing as the home team on Clark University's home field, won a pair games to complete the season sweep of its New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) rivals, winning game one 4-1 and taking the nightcap, 13-2 on Saturday afternoon.

The Engineers improve to 3-0 overall and in league play, while the Cougars slip to 4-9 overall and 0-3 in conference action.

Pitching proved to be a huge catalyst for MIT as they allowed just three run on the afternoon and only four in the three game set.

Aric Dama, who was a tough luck 1-0 loser in pitcher's duel two seasons ago in Worcester, exacted his revenge on the Cougars with a strong effort on the hill. He went 5.2 innings, scattering six hits, allowing a single run and striking out four.

Clark actually took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth, when Mitch DeLorenzo (Berlin, Conn.) collected his 100th career hit to start the inning. After he was erased on a fielder's choice, Zachary Richall (Tyngsboro, Mass.) singled to center and Nicholas O'Brien (Potomac, Md.) was hit by a pitch to load the bases. A single up the middle by Christopher Dibble (Manchester, Conn.) gave the Cougars their oonly advantage of the series.

MIT struck back quickly off of starter Michael Mainuli (Glastonbury, Conn.) in the bottom of the frame, as they pushed three runs across highlighted by a Jonathan Rea two-run single.

The Engineers added another in the fifth on a run scoring single by Ricardo Perez.

Clark looked to be in good shape in the sixth when James Conway (Newburyport, Mass.) doubled to open the inning and Brian Sullivan (Auburn, Mass.) reached on a fielding error, putting runners on first and second. Dama, however, was able to wiggle out of trouble with the help of Michael Wymer, who got Dibble to groundout to first to end the inning.

Henry Zhu, who saved the game on Friday, came back in the seventh and retired all three batters he faced for his second save of the year.

Game two, saw the Engineers push across four runs in both the fourth and fifth innings and eventually hold a 13-0 lead before Clark scored two in the ninth.

Miles Sheehan (Madison, Conn.) started off strong on the mound for the Cougars, recording four early strikeouts but the MIT bats came to life as nine of their 14 hits were for extra bases.

After James McKinney drove in a pair with a flare to the shortstop in the fourth, Eben Bitonte blasted a two-run homer in the fifth for his second in as many days.

Clark finally got on the board in the ninth when Sullivan was hit by a pitch and Richall singled to center. Sullivan came around on an RBI double by Daniel Lima (Manchester, Conn.) and Richall scored on a Dibble sacrifice fly.

The Cougars will return to the diamond on Tuesday with a road contest at MCLA. First pitch is slated for 3:00 p.m.
