Pitching Leads Cougars To Thrilling Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Auburndale, Fla. – Clark University received some stellar pitching performances from several individuals and the Cougars swept both ends of a doubleheader with Rivier College on Sunday afternoon at Lake Myrtle Field.

Clark won both contests by one run – taking the first game, 6-5 and the nightcap 3-2 to improve to 2-1 on the season, while the Raiders, playing their first two games in 2013 now sit at 0-2.

In the opener, the Cougars got three hits and two RBI from freshman Michael Eglow (Delmar, N.Y.) but trailed 5-4 heading into the bottom of the seventh. With one out, Eglow picked up an infield hit and then moved to second when Mitch DeLorenzo (Berlin, Conn.) was hit by a pitch. An error by the Raiders' Taylor Black left the bases loaded. Andrew Doolittle (Hebron, Conn.) then delivered the game-winning walkoff two-run single off of Rivier reliever Lucas Palma.

The two runs in the bottom of the seventh gave Derek Dubois (Haverhill, Mass.) the win in relief. He was dominant in his 3.1 innings of work, allowing just one hit and one earned run while striking out three.

In the nightcap, freshman Miles Sheehan (Madison, Conn.) made his collegiate debut a memorable one, tossing 6.2 innings of two hit-ball as the Cougars held on for a thrilling 3-2 win over the Raiders.

Clark took a 1-0 lead on a Matt Asdornvuttikrai (Winchester, Mass.) RBI groundout, then tacked on two more in the fourth when DeLorenzo drew a bases loaded walk and Doolittle had an RBI single to center.

Sheehan, meanwhile, was in total control, allowing just one Rivier hit in the first six innings.

The Raiders finally broke through and scored two runs in the seventh and had the tying run in scoring position when Brian Sullivan (Auburn, Mass.) came in to strike out the final Rivier batter to collect the save and preserve the win.

Clark is back in action on Tuesday with a pair of games against Penn State-Altoona.
