Box Score Worcester, Mass. – Visiting Babson College racked up 18 hits and got an effective performance on the mound from Matt Grenier (Rochester, N.H.) in taking the final meeting of a three-game NEWMAC baseball set with Clark University, 17-5 on Sunday afternoon on Granger Field.
Trevor Boyce went 4-for-5 at the plate for the with four runs scored and five RBI for the Beavers, who were on the verge of dropping the first two games of the series yesterday but rallied in the ninth of the nightcap to take the win and take the series, 2-1.
Babson now improves to 14-12 overall and 8-7 in league play, while the Cougars are 8-21 and 2-13 in conference action.
The Beavers put up four runs in the first off of Clark starter Michael Mainuli (Glastonbury, Conn.) and when the dust had cleared, they had 14 runs in the first four innings to take a commanding 14-1 lead.
Clark's lone run during that stretch came in the bottom of the first when Michael Eglow (Delmar, N.Y.) singled and eventually scored an unearned run on a Babson error.
The Beavers biggest blow of the day came courtesy of Boyce who had a three-run triple in the fourth off of Cougar reliever David Balme (New York, N.Y.).
Clark's other runs came on a sacrifice fly by Zachary Richall (Tyngsboro, Mass.) in the third and a Nicholas O'Brien (Potomac, Md.) two-run single in the fourth.
The Cougars did have 14 hits on the afternoon, led by Eglow who went 3-for-5. O'Brien, Matt Asdornvuttikrai (Winchester, Mass.), Brian Sullivan (Auburn, Mass.) and David Eschen (New York, N.Y.) all had two hits.
Babson's 1-2-3-4 hitters of Dillon Gonzalez, Boyce, Chris Kucher and Connor Kortmann all had outstanding day, combining to go 11-for-17 with 11 RBI and nine runs scored.
Grenier, meanwhile, went eight innings, scattering 12 hits and allowing five runs.
The Cougars will return to the field on Tuesday when they host Anna Maria at 5:00 p.m., while the Beavers travel to Curry on Tuesday as well.
