Box Score Springfield, Mass. – Host Springfield College took advantage of five Clark University errors and the Pride scored a pair of unearned runs en route to a 2-0 win over the Cougars in New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) baseball action on Tuesday afternoon on Berry-Allen Field.
With the victory, Springfield improves to 6-9 overall and 3-6 in conference action, while Clark has now lost three consecutive games to slip to 5-16 overall and 1-9 in league games.
Michael Mainuli (Glastonbury, Conn.) took the loss for the Cougars despite pitching extremely well. He tossed a complete game, allowing just four hits and no earned runs. It marks the second strong outing for Mainuli, who was the tough luck loser in last Tuesday's 2-1 loss to Nichols College.
Frank Calabrese (East Longmeadow, Mass.) scored the first run of the game for the Pride in the bottom of the first after he reached on a fielder's choice then advanced to second on a throwing error. He eventually came around to score a Mike McGowan (Franklin, Mass.) single.
The Cougars actually had a chance to take the lead in the top of the first when Michael Eglow (Delmar, N.Y.) singled and Andrew Doolittle (Hebron, Conn.) walked, putting runner on first and second with two outs. Brian Sullivan (Auburn, Mass.) followed that up with a single to left and Eglow tried to score from second but was gunned down with a strong throw by Pride leftfielder Kyle DiFranco (East Longmeadow, Mass.).
Clark errors helped put another run on the board for the Pride in the third when Steve Starr (Lebanon, Conn.) led off the frame by reaching on a catcher's interference call. DiFranco singled to left putting runners on first and second with nobody out.
A sacrifice by Calabrese left runners on second and third with one out and another fielding error by the Cougars allowed Starr to cross the dish with the game's second and final run.
The Scarlet and White actually outhit the Pride, 6-4, led by two hits apiece from Eglow, Sullivan and Matt Asdornvuttikrai (Winchester, Mass.) but the rest of the Cougar lineup went a combined 0-for-19.
Springfield's Travis Lane (Canton, Conn.) went the distance for the Pride, tossing nine shutout innings, allowing six hits and striking out six batters to pick up his first win of the season.
The Cougars and Springfield will resume their league series tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. at Clark's Granger Field.
